National Day of the Horse
The National Day of the Horse is one of the most significant national days we celebrate in Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club and the entire Marion County. Held every December 13th, this vital event reminds us of how horses helped form our history, economy and even our culture. It is our pride to be considered the Horse Capital of the World because of the excellent impact equestrian has brought not only North Central but the entire country.
Economy
There are approximately 80,260 horses in all of Ocala. No wonder the equine industry has a substantial impact on our city. We have about 37,290 thoroughbreds throughout Marion County. Thanks to these numbers, many people get employed in the horse industry.
Further, the equine industry helps the economy of Florida with 33% of its annual income coming from this industry. Ocala being the center of thoroughbred breeding and training site for horses makes the equine industry thrive well for years.
History
In 1943, the Rose family relocated to Marion County to create roads. They were surprised to find out that limestone is abundant in the area. Lime is known to be an excellent material to make asphalt and breed horses. They bought farmland in the site, and that was the beginning of the colorful history of the horse industry in Ocala.
The Roberts family had a vision of making Ocala like their estate, hence the Golden Ocala. At present, the Roberts are building the World Equestrian Center Ocala to instill equestrian principles and disciplines in the core of the Horse Country. The center is complete with arenas and barns, weather-controlled stalls, arenas, both indoors and outdoors, and riding trails.
Character
If you mention Marion County or Golden Ocala, the first thing that would come to mind would be horses. Anyone who has been in the area would think about equestrian activities when they get a chance to visit the place. It is the very reason why Ocala offers a variety of equine festivities for horse enthusiasts. One enjoyable activity is the Parade of Nations Horse Celebration. The event aims to recognize international riders competing in the Nations Cup. During the exercise, participants can watch the parade of Marion County equine breeds, and join in the pony petting activity.
Ocala hosts different equine events such as international dressage professionals and a group of amateur riders.
