TREE TRIMMING & PRUNING - PROFESSIONAL TREE MAINTENANCE & CARE
Tree Pruning & Trimming Service![]() Tree trimming (and pruning on a more regular basis) is required maintenance for almost all tree species indigenous to Northern Florida. However, this chore is regularly neglected, or worse - done poorly, by most property owners. Regular trimming and pruning promotes healthy growth and maintains a tree's shape, providing a more enjoyable aesthetic landscaping addition to your yard. For the most part, other than for younger and smaller trees, trimming should be performed by a licensed and insured professional. The reason is, as tree mature, the complexity is increased as is the risk fo accident. At Ocala Tree Service, we have the experience to expertly trimming you trees safely and beautifully.
Tree trimming should always be started from the top down. It is because of this that most property owners are ill-equipped and inexperienced to take on larger, more mature trees. The optimum approach to trimming to adopt the TCIA and ISA guidelines of one-thrid and one-fourth: |
|
- Only cut 1/4 or less of the crown of the tree year;
- Keep the side branches to 1/3 the circumference of the main trunk, or if a multi-trunked tree, the circumference of each individual trunk;
- Cut less than 1/3 the height of the tree, but never top a tree - this will permanently stunt growth and forever make the tree unnatural
- Cut side limbs to 1/3 sections of the tree's trunk.

In trimming trees yourself, when they are young and manageable for the average property owner, consider the following guidance;
If you have a larger tree, where the branch will fall before it is cleanly cut, it is always best to call a professional. They have the tools and experience to deal with larger limbs at heights and can easily and safely lower them without risk of damage to the tree and/or life.
- Preserve the strongest most vibrant limbs when trimming - trim around these better limbs to promote their continued growth;
- Make smaller cuts vs bigger ones. If you trim a tree regularly bigger cuts will be unnecessary. However, if one or more larger cuts are necessary, then space these cuts out over several trimming seasons;
- Never use dull trimmers or saws. Rough and torn cuts expose trees to insects and disease;
- Utilize a pole pruning saw or trimmer. This device is great for reaching higher limbs and also keeps you safely on the ground; and,
- Always cut limbs maintaining the collar - never cut right up against the trunk. This will invites insects and disease.
